2. Tournament Mechanics

MTRA 2.1

A match consists of a single game of magic. In the event the game would naturally result in a draw the match is considered to have ended in a draw.

MTRA 2.2

Players are seated in a predetermined order established by pairing software with Seat One as the starting player.

MTRA 2.3

Commanders are revealed prior to shuffling and presenting decks. A game should not start until all players are present or 5 minutes have elapsed in the round.

MTRA 2.4

There are no additional turns. The game ends when the active player passes their turn, it reaches 10 minutes past end of round, or a winner is declared (whichever comes first). If a non-active player is acting in the end step of the active turn when time is called, the subsequent turn becomes the final turn.

MTRA 2.5

During a multiplayer game, players are encouraged to concede while they have priority, and the stack is empty on their own turn. A player who needs to concede at any other time will be dropped from the event and must talk to a tournament organizer in order to re-enter. In this case, a judge will facilitate any mandatory actions of the conceded player until the stack is empty. In the event this happens in response to combat, the turn will be facilitated until the end of combat.

2.2: Play/Draw Rule

2.2B In the Single Elimination portion of Multiplayer Tournaments, the Player with the highest standing from the swiss portion of the Tournament will go first, followed by the Player with the next highest, until all player’s order is decided. However, if a player advanced in the Single Elimination portion with a Match Draw, their player order will be pushed to the end of the queue, where their Swiss standing will be used as a tiebreaker among other players that also advanced with a Draw.

Example: Alice was ranked first in the Swiss portion, and in their top 16 Match, they drew and advanced to the Finals. Bob was ranked second in the Swiss and won their match in top 16. Charlie was ranked third in the Swiss and won their match in the top 16. Daniel was ranked fourth and drew their top 16 Match. The seating and starting player order in the finals will be: Bob, Charlie, Alice, Daniel.

2.4A. In Multiplayer Tournaments, don’t use additional turns at the End of Round. Instead, the Active Player finishes their turn and if no winner is declared by then, the Match ends in a Draw. However, extra turn effects can still resolve and grant extra turns that can be played. Loops and Shortcuts involving extra turns can also be executed.
